name: cmux-automate
description: "Suggest and build useful cmux automations for an end user. Use when a user wants to automate repeated workflows, learn what the cmux CLI can do, turn current workspace layouts into reusable commands, add plus-button click or right-click launchers, create Command Palette commands, tab bar buttons, Dock controls, browser/markdown helpers, sidebar status/progress/log updates, notifications, event-driven scripts, hooks, or small project-local scripts backed by cmux CLI commands."

# cmux Automation
Use this skill to turn repeated work into cmux-native automation. Start with the
CLI because it is the most composable surface, then persist useful workflows with
project-local config when the user wants repeatable buttons or commands.
## Workflow
1. Audit the current workflow:
```bash
cmux identify --json
cmux tree
cmux top
test -f .cmux/cmux.json && sed -n '1,220p' .cmux/cmux.json
test -f .cmux/dock.json && sed -n '1,220p' .cmux/dock.json
```
Also inspect project scripts such as `package.json`, `justfile`,
`Taskfile.yml`, `Makefile`, `.github/workflows`, and existing agent docs.
2. Suggest a short menu of automations, ranked by immediate value. Explain the
cmux CLI primitives behind each option in concrete terms.
3. Prefer a quick CLI prototype before editing persistent config.
4. Persist accepted automations using the right surface:
- `.cmux/cmux.json` for project-local actions, commands, workspace layouts,
plus-button click, plus-button right-click menus, tab bar buttons, and
Command Palette entries.
- `.cmux/dock.json` for right-sidebar Dock controls.
- Small repo scripts for multi-step shell logic that is awkward in JSON.
- `AGENTS.md` instructions when future agents should use the automation.
5. Validate and reload:
```bash
cmux config validate
cmux reload-config
cmux tree
```
## Automation Ideas to Suggest
- Current layout to command: recreate the active workspace with `new-workspace`
or a `commands[].workspace.layout` entry.
- Plus-button launcher: make left-click open the default project workflow with
`ui.newWorkspace.action`.
- Plus-button right-click menu: expose alternate starters with
`ui.newWorkspace.contextMenu`, such as Worktree Agents, SSH Devbox, Review PR,
Docs Workspace, Full-Stack Dev, CI Watch, New Terminal, and New Browser.
- Command Palette commands: add named `actions` or `commands` for repeated
tasks the user wants available from Cmd+Shift+P.
- Surface tab bar buttons: add one-click Codex, Claude, browser, split, test, or
custom-agent buttons while preserving built-ins unless the user asks to hide
them.
- Dock controls: add persistent controls for tests, logs, dev servers, queues,
`lazygit`, `gh run watch`, CircleCI, deployment monitors, or
`cmux feed tui --opentui`.
- Browser helpers: script cmux browser surfaces for preview, login checks,
screenshots, console/errors, cookies, storage, and portable state capture.
- Markdown helpers: open live plans, docs, PR notes, or runbooks with
`cmux markdown open`.
- Sidebar signals: update status pills, progress, logs, read state, and
workspace descriptions with CLI commands.
- Notification flows: send, list, open, clear, and mark notifications for
agent or CI scripts.
- Event-driven scripts: use `cmux events` as NDJSON to react to workspace,
surface, browser, notification, and Feed events.
- Agent hooks: use `cmux hooks setup` and Feed routing so agent approvals,
questions, and completion events surface in cmux.
- Remote and VM workflows: use `cmux ssh` and `cmux vm` or `cmux cloud` when
the user wants remote workspaces or cloud devboxes.
## CLI-First Rules
- Use short refs such as `workspace:2`, `pane:1`, and `surface:7` in examples.
- Use `--json` for scripts and human-readable output for explanations.
- Prefer caller context from `CMUX_WORKSPACE_ID` and `CMUX_SURFACE_ID` when a
script runs inside cmux.
- Keep focus-neutral defaults unless the user explicitly wants the automation to
steal focus.
- Use `cmux trigger-flash` for visual confirmation after non-obvious routing.
- Use `cmux docs <topic>` and `cmux <command> --help` before relying on unclear
syntax.
- Avoid internal/debug/test-only commands unless the user is developing cmux.
## Safety
- Prefer project-local `.cmux/` config for repo workflows. Use global config
only for personal app-wide preferences.
- Before editing an existing config, create a timestamped backup next to it.
- Do not put secrets in config, action prompts, or command strings. Use env
vars, shell profiles, or a secret store.
- Do not replace built-in plus-button or tab bar entries unless the user asked
for a fully custom surface.
- Use `ui.newWorkspace.contextMenu` for new plus-button right-click examples,
not the older `rightClick` alias.
- Confirm every `workspaceCommand.commandName` matches a `commands[].name`.
- If terminal behavior is owned by Ghostty, use Ghostty config instead of cmux
automation.
## References
- Read `references/cli-primer.md` when explaining what the cmux CLI can do or
choosing command primitives.
- Read `references/recipes.md` when the user asks for automation ideas,
examples, starter workflows, or a reusable project setup.
- Use `../cmux-customization/SKILL.md` when editing `cmux.json` or Dock config.
- Use `../cmux-browser/SKILL.md` for browser-surface automation.
- Use `../cmux-markdown/SKILL.md` for live markdown panels.

# cmux CLI Primer for Automation
Use the CLI to inspect, prototype, and verify automations before making them
persistent.
## Handles and Context
- `window:N`, `workspace:N`, `pane:N`, and `surface:N` are short refs accepted by
most commands.
- UUIDs are accepted too. Use `--id-format both` when a script needs both refs
and UUIDs.
- Inside cmux terminals, `CMUX_WORKSPACE_ID` and `CMUX_SURFACE_ID` identify the
caller context. Prefer those defaults for local helper scripts.
- Use `cmux identify --json` to confirm the active socket, window, workspace,
pane, and surface.
## Topology
Inspect:
```bash
cmux tree
cmux list-windows
cmux list-workspaces
cmux list-panes
cmux list-pane-surfaces --pane pane:1
cmux top
```
Create and route:
```bash
cmux new-window
cmux new-workspace --name "Dev" --cwd . --command "bun dev"
cmux new-split right
cmux new-pane --type browser --direction right --url http://localhost:3000
cmux new-surface --type terminal --pane pane:1
cmux move-surface --surface surface:7 --pane pane:2 --focus false
cmux split-off --surface surface:7 right
cmux reorder-surface --surface surface:7 --before surface:3
cmux trigger-flash --surface surface:7
```
## Terminal Control
Read and send:
```bash
cmux read-screen --surface surface:7 --lines 80
cmux send --surface surface:7 "git status\n"
cmux send-key --surface surface:7 enter
cmux capture-pane --surface surface:7 --scrollback --lines 200
cmux pipe-pane --surface surface:7 --command "rg ERROR"
cmux respawn-pane --surface surface:7 --command "bun test --watch"
```
Use terminal control for setup checks, status probes, and task handoffs. Avoid
sending destructive commands unless the user explicitly asked for that action.
## Browser Control
Common automation:
```bash
cmux browser open http://localhost:3000
cmux browser surface:2 wait --load-state complete --timeout-ms 15000
cmux browser surface:2 snapshot --interactive
cmux browser surface:2 click "button[type='submit']" --snapshot-after
cmux browser surface:2 fill "#email" --text "$EMAIL"
cmux browser surface:2 screenshot --out /tmp/cmux-preview.png
cmux browser surface:2 console list
cmux browser surface:2 errors list
```
State and debugging:
```bash
cmux browser surface:2 cookies get
cmux browser surface:2 storage local get theme
cmux browser surface:2 state save /tmp/cmux-browser-state.json
```
Some advanced browser controls, such as network routing, tracing, viewport,
geolocation, offline mode, screencast, and low-level input, may return
`not_supported` depending on the current cmux browser engine. Prefer
console/errors/screenshot/state commands for portable automations.
## Markdown, Notifications, and Sidebar
```bash
cmux markdown open plan.md --direction right --focus false
cmux notify --title "Tests passed" --body "bun test completed"
cmux list-notifications
cmux jump-to-unread
cmux set-status ci "running"
cmux set-progress 0.4 --workspace workspace:2
cmux log --workspace workspace:2 "Started smoke test"
cmux sidebar-state --json
cmux right-sidebar show
cmux right-sidebar mode dock
```
These commands are useful for scripts that should keep humans oriented while
work runs in the background.
## Events and Hooks
```bash
cmux events --json
cmux hooks setup --yes
cmux hooks setup --agent codex --yes
cmux hooks feed --source codex
cmux feed tui --opentui
```
Use `cmux events` for reactive scripts. Use hooks for agent lifecycle,
permission, question, and completion events.
## Config and Docs
```bash
cmux docs settings
cmux docs dock
cmux config validate
cmux reload-config
cmux settings cmux-json
cmux shortcuts
cmux themes list
```
Use `cmux <command> --help` when a command shape is unclear. Prefer documented
commands over raw `cmux rpc` unless there is no stable CLI wrapper.

# cmux Automation Recipes
Use these as starting points. Prefer project-local `.cmux/` files for repo
workflow automation.
## Current Workspace to Reusable Command
1. Inspect the active layout:
```bash
cmux identify --json
cmux tree
```
2. Write a `.cmux/cmux.json` `commands[]` entry that recreates the useful
terminal, browser, and split layout.
3. Add a Command Palette action only if the command should be surfaced as a
named action or tab bar button.
## Plus Button as Workflow Launcher
Use left-click for the default workflow and right-click for alternatives:
`.cmux/cmux.json`:
```json
{
"actions": {
"default-dev": {
"type": "workspaceCommand",
"title": "Default Dev",
"commandName": "Default Dev"
},
"review-pr": {
"type": "workspaceCommand",
"title": "Review PR",
"commandName": "Review PR"
}
},
"ui": {
"newWorkspace": {
"action": "default-dev",
"contextMenu": [
{ "action": "default-dev", "title": "Default Dev" },
{ "action": "review-pr", "title": "Review PR" },
{ "type": "separator" },
{ "action": "cmux.newTerminal", "title": "New Terminal" },
{ "action": "cmux.newBrowser", "title": "New Browser" }
]
}
}
}
```
Always define matching `commands[].name` entries for every `workspaceCommand`.
## Dev Workspace with Browser and Dock
Use `.cmux/cmux.json` for the workspace command and `.cmux/dock.json` for
long-running controls:
`.cmux/cmux.json`:
```json
{
"commands": [
{
"name": "Default Dev",
"workspace": {
"name": "Dev",
"cwd": ".",
"layout": {
"direction": "horizontal",
"children": [
{
"pane": {
"surfaces": [
{ "type": "terminal", "name": "Server", "command": "bun dev" }
]
}
},
{
"pane": {
"surfaces": [
{ "type": "browser", "name": "Preview", "url": "http://localhost:3000" }
]
}
}
]
}
}
}
]
}
```
`.cmux/dock.json`:
```json
{
"controls": [
{ "id": "tests", "title": "Tests", "command": "bun test --watch", "cwd": ".", "height": 280 },
{ "id": "git", "title": "Git", "command": "lazygit", "cwd": ".", "height": 320 },
{ "id": "feed", "title": "Feed", "command": "cmux feed tui --opentui", "height": 260 }
]
}
```
## PR Review Workspace
Good ingredients:
- Terminal: `gh pr status`, `gh pr view --web`, or a local review command.
- Browser: PR URL or checks URL.
- Markdown: `cmux markdown open REVIEW.md` for notes.
- Sidebar: `cmux set-status review "in progress"` and `cmux log`.
## CI Watch Dock
Good controls:
`.cmux/dock.json`:
```json
{
"controls": [
{
"id": "gh-runs",
"title": "GitHub Runs",
"command": "gh run list --limit 10; latest=$(gh run list --limit 1 --json databaseId --jq '.[0].databaseId // empty'); test -n \"$latest\" && gh run watch \"$latest\"",
"cwd": ".",
"height": 260
},
{
"id": "feed",
"title": "Feed",
"command": "cmux feed tui --opentui",
"height": 260
}
]
}
```
## Bug Repro Workspace
Good ingredients:
- Terminal for the repro command.
- Browser preview with console and errors available through `cmux browser`.
- Markdown notes panel with reproduction steps.
- Status/progress updates from the repro script.
- `cmux trigger-flash` when the repro reaches the step needing human attention.
## Agent Hook Automation
Use hooks when users want agent activity to update cmux automatically:
```bash
cmux hooks setup --yes
cmux feed tui --opentui
```
Useful outcomes:
- Permission prompts and questions show in Feed.
- Agent completion sends notifications.
- Scripts can call `cmux set-status`, `cmux set-progress`, and `cmux log` from
hook handlers or wrapper scripts.
